Strain development Developed by Dr. Shinya Yamanaka at Nara Institute of Science and Technology in 2001. The mutant mice were backcross to C57BL/6J.
Strain description Visfatin is produced by the visceral fat and whose expression level in plasma increases during the development of obesity. Visfatin exterted insulin-mimetic effects in cultured cells and lowered plasma glucose levels in mice. Homozygous mutant mice are embryonic lethal. Heterozygous mice show increased plasma glucose levels but normal insulin evels.
